Montana Sex Distinct Update

For several years, the state of Montana has mandated that all insurance policies be unisex. Late in 2021, Montana passed legislation allowing individual products to use sex-distinct rates if they choose, starting as early as January 1, 2022.

On February 1, Protective life insurance products will move to sex distinct rates, which means females applying for life policies in Montana should see noticeably more competitive rates.

Transition Rules based on effective date:

  • If male after December 31, 2021, there will be no changes in the customer or agent process and will be continued to offer male/unisex rates.
  • If female between January 1, 2022 (date the law was effective) and January 31, 2022, the system and policy will still display the male/unisex rate. The policy can be amended to reflect female rates and re-issue after February 1, 2022.
  • If female after February 1, 2022, the system and policy will reflect the sex distinct rates.
